Valuable to EMS and the Community

Continuing education is not only a constant focus for our staff and crew, it is also required by the state of Missouri. To meet this requirement, LifeFlight Eagle provides continuing education internally for our own employees and also externally for ground agencies we work with.

Emergency medical skills must be honed at all times so it is critical for EMS personnel to consistently train in current techniques and methods. For LifeFlight Eagle the opportunity to teach ground EMS personnel is also a chance to connect and network with those we work with.
At an actual scene, there is little time for socializing or developing good relationships. Generally, it’s “load and go” as the patient is being packaged and handed over to our care. Continuing education courses allow all involved to maintain licensure while getting to know each other better – both results bring about better patient care.

Past courses offered include EKG recognition, STEMI, stroke, trauma, and more.

This year, the focus is stroke and STEMI with the help of the American Stroke Association’s curriculum.

On four different occasions this year, LifeFlight Eagle instructors will provide courses to ground EMS personnel, covering stroke and STEMI for any EMS provider (EMT or EMT-P) as it relates to symptom recognition, initial treatment, transport decisions and identifying appropriate centers of care.

LifeFlight Eagle’s continuing education courses are open to any EMS agency in our service area. Dates for classes have not yet been selected but interested parties are encouraged to contact the main office in Kansas City for updates, as classes will fill up.

For our own staff and crews, the objects of study will be the assessment and treatment of stroke and STEMI as well as determining the severity of stroke, or the scale of a stroke, as well as deci¬sion factors for selecting appropriate facility destinations for these types of patients.

LifeFlight Eagle also has a great relationship with MAST Ambulance. This allows us to participate in ongoing continuing education courses with MAST’s Human Patient Simulator (HPS) program. The HPS is an incredibly lifelike mannequin which is directly connected to computer software and able to give responses to different types of treatment, even intravenous medications. This allows nurses and paramedics to test and perfect skills over and over again in a controlled environment and particularly on medical issues that may be seen rarely in the field.
